Since 2015, World Soil Day (WSD) is held annually by Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), ICAR Institutes and Agricultural Universities of the country on 5 December as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and advocating for the sustainable management of soil resources. On 5 December 2017 a total of 573 KVKs organized the event with participation of more than 2.06 lakh participants including 1.97 lakh farmers. A number of activities like Farmer-Scientist Interactions, Exhibitions on soil health management, soil sampling and testing demonstrations, plant nutrient deficiency diagnostics and advisories for balanced nutrition of crops, field visits and distribution of soil health cards were organized on the occasion. As many as 1.68 lakh soil health cards were prepared and distributed by the KVKs to the farmers. Farmers were also explained about soil test based use of fertilizers. The event was witnessed by 667 public representatives including 4 Hon’ble union Ministers, 51 Hon’ble Members of Parliament and 1 Hon’ble CM.
