Beekeeping is the management of bees essentially for honey, wax, and for crop pollination that leading to crop production. Honey and wax are the by-products of a bee colony that add up to large income in terms of money. Beekeeping is a very rewarding enterprise and is very much suitable for adoption by farmers. Honey bee rearing or Beekeeping can be a delightful income source for rural people. It does not require very hard, continuous labour and much money to start and also can be handled much easily. With this objective Krishi Vigyan Kendra, South Tripura has started demonstration unit on apiculture for awareness creation and providing training to rural youth and women along with practical demonstration on method of colony handling, winter care, bee disease management etc. Different extension activities like radio talk, TV programme and extension literature has been developed for wide spread of the bee keeping among the rural farm women and unemployed youth. The KVK has conducted 34 numbers of training and awareness programme on bee keeping covering 1022 numbers of beneficiaries with method demonstration on colony handling, disease management and winter care of bee colonies. At present, KVK, South Tripura is working on collection of wild bee colony, domestication of it and multiplication in the KVK farm so that new colonies can be distributed to beneficiaries of South Tripura.

Due to indiscriminate application of chemical fertilizers, soil health and water pollution has been increasing day by day which ultimately has a terrible impact on human health as well as environment. Under this circumstances, application of vermicompost as a substitute of chemical fertilizers to some extent can only reduce the detrimental effect on human health and environment. Vermicompost has been gaining importance for its high nutrient contents and the presence of growth promoting substances. Due to presence of many beneficial microorganisms in vermicompost, activities like nitrogen fixation, phosphorous solubilisation and suppression of harmful microorganisms in the crop fields is another beneficial effect of it. Vermicomposting is the method of making compost from agricultural and kitchen wastes with the use of earthworms has played a significance role in organic cultivation of crops. Vermicompost is a profit oriented enterprise if one takes it as a commercial form. With this objective Krishi Vigyan Kendra, South Tripura has started demonstration unit on Vermicomposting (3 unit each measuring 3m x 2m x 0.75m) for awareness creation and providing training to practicing farmers and rural youth along with practical demonstration on method of composting, material to be used, Earth worm management etc. Different extension activities like publication of extension literature and folders has been developed for wide spread of the Scientific Vermicomposting technique. The KVK has conducted 43 numbers of capacity building training (one day and two days period) and awareness programme on organic composting covering 1290 numbers of beneficiaries with method demonstration on composting, composting materials and application in crop field. The KVK, South Tripura in collaboration with Spice board, Agartala has made 28 numbers of vermicomposting tanks operationaland presently beneficiaries are making vermicompost through it after getting all technical help from KVK, South Tripura.

DUCK CUM FISH FARMING at KVK, South Tripura

KVK South Tripura has started the Mushroom production unit since 2006 to make awareness among farmers and rural women. A total of 51 women SHGs were trained covering 514 numbers of women and 202 numbers of individual farmers and rural youth on Scientific Mushroom cultivation with required method demonstration for Substrate preparation, Mushroom cube making and post harvest processing. Different extension activities like training, demonstration, news paper coverage, publication of extension literature and training manual on Scientific Mushroom cultivation has been carried out for popularization and wide spread of the mushroom cultivation as an additional source of income generation as well as entrepreneurship development among unemployed rural youth and women.

Carp breeding programme of Indian Major Carps (IMCs) are being carried out every year for spawn production using hatchery technology at KVK fish Farm.
