Description : Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Longleng, Nagaland successfully organized one-day training program on “Sustainable Practices of Millets to Manage Resource Depletion” on September 10 at KVK office, Longleng. The programme was organized with the leadership of Dr. H. C. Kalita, Senior Scientist & Head of KVK, Longleng. Around 40 farmers attended the training programme. Kumari Pallavi SMS (Home Science) coordinated the training programme and, during the technical session, covered the importance of millets in our diets. It is a good source of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. The potential health benefits of millet include protecting cardiovascular health, preventing diabetes, helping people to maintain healthy body weight. The session focused on effective resource management practices that are crucial in combating resource depletion and ensuring long-term productivity in pulse cultivation. “Sustainable Practices of Oilseed Crops to manage resource depletion” organised by KVK-Longleng, Nagaland

Description : Oilseed crops are mostly grown for the purpose of extraction of edible vegetable oils. The diverse agro-ecological conditions in the country are favourable for growing all the annual oilseeds, which include viz. groundnut, rapeseed-mustard, soybean, sunflower, sesame, safflower and niger, and also non-edible sources, viz. castor and linseed. In order to increase the domestic production of oilseeds and reduce the import bill and make the country self-reliant in vegetable oil, the availability of improved production technology and its adoption, expansion in cultivated area, price support policy,information and awareness about the sowing methods, association of KVKs in technology transfer and institutional support are needed. Therefore, ICAR-KVK, Longleng, Nagaland organised a day long training programme on “Sustainable practices of oilseed crops to manage resource depletion” on 6th September, 2024 at KVK office, Longleng. Animal health cum vaccination camp held at Bura Namsang Village Longleng

Description : KVK Longleng under ICAR RC for NEH Region Nagaland centre in collaboration with Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services department and NSRLM Longleng conducted day long Animal health cum vaccination camp at Bura Namsang village on 30th August, 2024. During the camp advisory services like deworming of livestock and poultry, sanitation and prevention of common diseases were deliberated. Antibiotic powder, boluses, dewormer, vitamin and mineral mixtures powder and liquids, antiseptic ointments were distributed to the farmers. A total of 120 pigs were vaccinated with Classical swine Fever vaccine, 78 cattle with Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine and 110 dogs with anti rabies vaccine. A total of 7 surgical cases like castration and hernia in dog, cat and pig were performed during the camp. Input Distribution Programme KVK Longleng successfully distributed essential agricultural tools to local farmers. Dr. Hari Charan Kalita, Head cum Senior Scientist of KVK Longleng, leading the charge alongside his dedicated staffs, provided 129 farmers with the ICAR-CRIJAF Nail Weeder under the distinguished guidance and support of esteemed Head of ICAR NEH Nagaland Centre Dr. Homeswar Kalita. This initiative, part of the North Eastern Region (NER) programme, was carried out in collaboration with the ICAR-Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres (CRIJAF), Kolkata. The participants include educated unemployed youths, school drop outs and school going students. Description : The resource person for the programme were Dr. Azeze, Scientist (Horticulture) and Dr. Pempa Bhutia, Scientist (Agro Forestry) from ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema. The programme started with a brief introduction by Dr. Lily Ngullie, SMS and incharge KVK Longleng. About the implementation of TSP project on large scale cultivation of ginger (var. nadia) at Lingtak village. Packages and practices of organic ginger cultivation along with demonstration was delivered by Dr. Azeze and importance of conservation of agroforestry trees especially on top of hills for conservation of soil and water was delivered by Dr. Pempa Bhutia. During the programme 160 q. of ginger rhizome (Var Nadia) and inputs were distributed to the selected farmers for ginger cultivation in a 8 hectare compacted area. The programme concluded with vote of thanks from village council chairman Mr. Shungai Phom. All together 48 farmers with KVK staff and scientist attended the programme.

Description : ICAR KVK Longleng conducted Animal Health cum Vaccination camp on 12th October, 2021 at Lingtak village. During the camp, Dr. Lily Ngullie, ACTO KVK Longleng briefed about the importance of vaccination in pigs with Swine Fever vaccine since it is the most common disease occurring in pigs with huge mortality and anti rabies vaccine (ARV) in dogs. Importance of regular deworming in livestock and administration of mineral mixture supplementation for better growth and productivity were also discussed during the camp. All together 41 pigs, 22 dogs were vaccinated benefitting 59 farmers. The camp was assisted by Veterinary Field Assistants from department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Longleng. The village chairman council, Mr. Sungai thanked the KVK department for organising Animal Health cum Vaccination camp which is first of its kind in their village.

Field Day on Organic Ginger (Nadia)

Description : Twenty hectares compacted area was selected for the project in the 1st year involving total of 42 progressive farmers from Lingtak village. A total of 2 tons (2000 Kg) ginger rhizome was sown during the first season in the year 2020 following scientific packages and practices of ginger cultivation. The rhizome was treated with bio control agent-Tricoderma for controlling rot and only Farm Yard Manure (FYM) was used as manure for the crop. The total yield during the first year harvest is 20.83 tons/ ha which is expected to double during the successive year owing to expansion of the cultivated area. The intervention of KVK Longleng in achieving the target for doubling farmer’s income 2022 is on the positive note due to the efforts by the hardworking farmers. The hard work effort of KVK team rendered to the farming community has yielded good result which is commendable and admired by all quarter of life.

Medicines like anthelminthics, antiseptic ointments, sprays, antibiotic bolus and powder, vitamin and mineral mixtures were distributed to the farmers. Treatment of sick animals and vaccination of pigs with Swine fever vaccine and dogs with anti-rabies vaccine were carried out during the camp assisted by the VFAs of District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Office Longleng. All together 87 pigs and 49 dogs were vaccinated. The chairman of the village, Mr. Shingmei thank the Senior Scientist and Head KVK and his team for taking initiative to conduct Animal health camp and vaccination in the village. Overall 92 farmers were benefitted through the programme.

Chief Guest emphasised about the awareness of water storage and judicious uses and negative consequences of water scarcity in the near future. Separate exhibition stall was organised showcasing methods of water conservation and minimum water irrigation in the field crop using drip system. Invocation by pastor Tamlu village. KVK head senior scientist Dr. K.L.Meena addresses welcome speech, presentation about water conservation strategies by Dr.Lily (ACTO) animal science KVK, Longleng. Vote of thanks was pronounced by Namei SRF KVK Longleng. Many Senior citizen of Tamlu areas lauded KVK Longleng and suggest to uphold its work activities. About 500 farmers attended the programme.

The lectures included are scenario of poultry industry in India, scope of poultry farming in Nagaland, management of early chick mortality, housing, sanitation of poultry house, scientific balanced feeding for different stages of poultry chicken, prevention and disease management, vaccination of important poultry diseases, economic cost and profit of poultry farming, record keeping and cultivation of cereal crops for poultry feeding. He also encouraged the farmers for judicious use of firewood. The Guest of Honour Dr. Henshet Phom, Vice principal Yingli College, Longleng, spoke about the importance of tree plantation and its impact in human. During the programme Dr. K.L Meena Sr. Scientist & Head KVK Longleng emphasised on the important strategies for Rabi season. Importance of soil health & water conservation was delivered by Mr. Namei, SRF KVK Longleng. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Lily Ngullie ACTO A/Sc. and vote of thanks by Mr. Yumi Tech. Officer KVK Longleng. The chairman of the village Mr. Shimgmei thank KVK department for taking initiative in mass tree plantation around the village. All together 84 farmers participated in the programme along with officials from Environment Climate Change & Forest department and Yingli college.

Resource person, Dr. Langnyei, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon (VAS) Longleng delivered lecture on managemental practices of FMD and Brucellosis in cattle and other livestock. Dr. Lily Ngullie ACTO Animal Science, KVK Longleng delivered lecture on increase productivity in livestock through Artificial Insemination. On the occasion 22 nos. of cows were vaccinated for FMD (Foot Mouth Disease) in the village. Senior Scientist & Head KVK Longleng Dr. K.L.Meena welcomed the gathering and encouraged the farmers to avail vaccines for their animals which are freely available in the Veterinary dispensaries. Addressing the farmers and lauded the KVK and ATMA, Longleng for jointly organizing the programme and providing tech. aspects on water conservation to the farmers of the district. He was hopeful that the scheme will be successful and fruitful for the people of Longleng. Asserting that Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) is an initiative of the Prime Minister of India and Longleng district was fortunate to be selected on priority among the many districts of Nagaland under the JSA program. To ensure proper implementation of JSA scheme in the district he said the central team has been constantly visiting Longleng district holding various program at different levels including field visits and at the same time the line departments have been busy with the JSA program with dedication ever since the program was launched in the district. The special guests, Miniga Sherpa and Dharam Raj, Asstt. secty. to Govt. of India also spoke and encouraged the farmers.

Description : during the Animal Health camp mineral mixture powder, liquid vitamin, dewormer, ectoparasitic powder and spray, antibiotic powders, antidiarrhoeal boluses were distributed to the farmers. Sick animals were also treated during the camp. Many farmers came forward to enquire about the health of their animals. Around 133 male and 40 female participated during the camp. The chairman of the village thanked the KVK staff Longleng and Joint Director ICAR RC for NEH Region Nagaland centre for organizing such programme in the village which is first of its kind and no other department has conducted Animal Health camp in the village till date , he added.

Venue : FLD on Toria was conducted at farmers field of five villages under Longleng District of Nagaland. Awarness cum training programme was organized in different villages and farmers was selected. Toria seed was supplied to the farmers during the months of October. Total 12 ha. area was covered.
Description : Farmers are growing only one crop and most of the area was kept fallow after rice crop in the District. Therefore, income of the farmers is low and also cropping intensity of the district is only 112 %. Baseline survey was done before the selection of the area and farmers for sutaibility of the crop in the District. Awareness cum training was organized for oilseed in different villages. Demonstration programme was conducted and Toria seed (Cv. TS 38) was distributed to the farmers the month of October. Total area under Toria was covered 12.0 ha under seed production programme.Oil expeller machine was installed at KVK Longleng office for extraction of oil.

Description : Jalkund-a low cost scientific rainwater harvesting structure successfully implemented in the Jhum areas of Hukphang, Namching, Pongching, Pongo, Shayung, Oushok, Nyang, Montikang, Yaong Yimchen and Orangkong village of Longleng district. In farmers practice, the water productivity (WP) of Jalkund were recorded 0.15, 0.13 and 0.17 kg/m3, whereas in technology intervention it was recorded 0.34, 0.31 and 0.28 for Chilli, Tomato and Cabbage respectively. The water use efficiency (WUE) were recorded 11.3, 10.7 and 12.0 kg/ha/mm in farmer’s traditional practices whereas it was recorded 5.5, 6.3 and 5.9 kg/ha/mm for Chilli, Tomato and Cabbage respectively in technology intervention. Benefit cost ratio of Chilli, Tomato and Cabbage was recorded 1.21, 1.23 and 1.12 in farmer’s practices whereas it was recorded 1.73, 1.67 and 1.77 in technology intervention respectively.

Percentage change in parameters was 116% which saves 1.2 times labour per hectare. For evaluation of drudgery reduction of maize sheller in shelling of maize revealed that shelling capacity of maize sheller was 15-22 kg/hr. in demonstration whereas in case of manual shelling (local check) it was 3-5 kg/hr. Percentage change in parameters was 362.5% which saves 3.6 times labour per hectare.

Altogether twenty three (23) nos. of farmers and rural youth from Mon, Longleng, Wokha, Mukokchung, Zunehboto, Tuensang, Kohima, Dimapur districts of Nagaland and Khasi and Garo hill of Meghalaya were attended the training. The inaugural programme was graced by Mrs. Sara S. Jamir, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Medziphema as the Chief Guest. Mrs Jamir in her inaugural address has expressed that due to non availability of processing and value addition, post harvest losses are common in Nagaland and this type of training will grow awareness among the local farmers for storage and preservation of fruit and vegetables. She has also advised the farmers to learn about the techniques of processing and value addition properly so that they could take it as future venture for income generation.

Altogether 70nos of farmers participated in the day long Kisan Gosti. The programme was commenced with prayer followed by welcome address by Dr. K.L. Meena, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Longleng. The Programme Coordinator appealed the farmers to learn on different new technologies to be demonstrated during the programme. Mr. Z. Lohe, EAC, Longleng graced occasion as Chief Guest. Mr Lohe appraised the farmers for organizing the 1st Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav awareness programme in their village. He informed the house that KVK, Longleng has adopted Mongtikang and Lingtak village under Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav among 40 villages of the district. . Dr. P. OFT on Ergonomical Study of Wheel Hoe during weeding of soybean cultivation

The study was conducted for comparing manual weeding and weeding through wheel hoe. In both the cases total cost of work was estimated during the work and the rest.
Description : Erogonomical study was conducted on 20 nos. of farm women during the weeding operation in soybean cultivation. The study was conducted for comparing manual weeding and weeding through wheel hoe. In both the cases total cost of work was estimated during the work and the rest. Working heart rate and resting heart rate was recorded for estimating total cardiac cost of work (TCCW) and physiological cost of work (PCW). The energy expenditure (EE) was also estimated for manual and wheel hoe weeding to compare the energy consumption and physiological cost of work (PCW). The study showed that TCCW (2695.5) and PCW (89.85) were found higher than the wheel hoe weeding i.e., TCCW=2149.5, PCW=71.65). The study also concluded that overall discomfort was found in manual weeding.
