The welcome address and introduction on safe & judicious use of pesticides was given by HIL(India) Ltd. representative Mr. Partha Pratim Pradhan. A total of 158 farmers and farm women were given technical training on IPM and safe & judicious use of pesticides & promoting eco-friendly crop protection solutions to reduce persistent organic pollutants (POPs) & highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs) was given by Dr. Vanlalhruaia, SMS (Plant Protection), KVK Mamit District and all the trainees were also given PPE kits.

Description : Two days theory online and one day practical training were conducted on Glyphosate use for Pest Control Operators at KVK Complex, Lengpui, Mizoram. On day one, 4 theory classes on introduction to Glyphosate and its uses, physical and chemical properties, available formulations of and their mode of action, toxicity classification including acute and chronic toxicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive effects and fate in the body; and on day two, 4 theory classes on environmental fate and ecotoxic studies, method of calibration and calculation on doses, weed control efficiency, Weed index and Type of sprayer, nozzle, etc. for glyphosate use were conducted. On the third day, practical training on calculation on dose and quantities of Glyphosate, Calculation on weed control efficiency and weed index, do’s and don’ts of Glyphosate application label and leaflet warnings of glyphosate application and method of application of glyphosate using different types of sprayer, nozzle were also conducted.

The KVK Scientists were accompanied by Mrs. Lyncy Lalrindiki, Agriculture Extension Officer from the Directorate of Agriculture (R&E), Mizoram. The team visits the farmers field and identified many pest and diseases prevails in their farm and they have been suggested and given the importance of maintaining sanitation for the improvement of their farm.

Mass Vaccination of Swine (door to door) against Swine Fever at Lengpui Village

Description : KVK Mamit District, Lengpui (since 2009 up to 2018) has been vaccinating swine population of Lengpui Village (door to door) every year against Swine Fever due to its high mortality rate. Up to 2017 occurrence of clinical Swine Fever had been reduced to 58% from an approximated 400 plus house holds rearing pigs at their back yards at Lengpui village alone. The number of pigs vaccinated this year i.e. 2018 were only 218 as compared to the previous year which numbered 410. The reduction in numbers vaccinated can be accounted to the slaughtering of fattened pigs during the festive season viz., December 2017 (Christmas and New Year celebration.

Celebration of World Soil Health Day

Description : About 49 participants attended the training where 45 were farmers, 3 officials and 1 Panchayati Raj chairman. The event was chaired by Mr. Vanlalhruaia, i/c Sr. Scientist & Head, accompanied by Dr. Rohit Shukla (Scientist, Horticulture), Dr. Henry Saplalrinliana (Scientist, Soil Science) and 2 other KVK Staff. Introductory remarks was exhorted by the chairman while Dr. Henry delivered the theme speech. A short farmer-scientist interaction was also had. 57 Soil health cards were distributed. Soil samples were also collected at the 2nd half of the event. Photography session, refreshments, discussions, visit to progressive farmers within the village, visit to successful entrepreneurs from earlier KVK training were the main highlights of the day.

Description : A Farmer Scientist Interactions under ATMA was conducted at Rulpuihlim village (Doubling Farmers Income adopted village) on 26th October, 2017. A total of 52 farmers attended the interactions. The farmers asked about their problems and the KVK scientists tried to solve their problems through interactions. The farmers were also given training on cultivation and raising of rabi crops and plant protection chemicals were distributed to them. The women farmers were also given practical training on value addition by our Scientist(Home Science). Soil samples was also collected for testing in our laboratory and community nursery for rabi crops such as cabbage, broccoli, chilli and brinjal were also raised for further distribution to the farmers.

Description : The event starts at 12:00 Noon. The programme was attended by Govt. Middle School girls, Lengpui Farmers Club and local farm women. There was a competition on Essay writing and Drawing on the theme of women in agriculture, women empowerment and income generation. A small exhibition was also organized displaying handicrafts like knit sweaters, bags, hat, stitched apron, handmade doormat, pickles, jam, squash, chips, nuts which was prepared and made by our Scientist (Home Science) and Prog Assistant(Home Science), so as to encouraged them that women play a very important role in agriculture in different ways. At the end of the programme, there was an award distribution for the essay & drawing competition(1st to 3rd Prize) and also for the Lengpui Farmers Club and local farm women for their prominent contribution in agriculture in the locality.

On the second day, farm women learnt how to make different kinds of pickles like neem patta, banana inflorescence, chilli, bird's eye chilli, etc. The third day was concluded by learning of preparing lemon squash, ginger squash and baking a cake without oven.

Thanzuala, Joint Director of Agriculture (R&E), Mizoram and all the Head of departments of the agriculture and allied departments of Mamit district and even the SBI manager, Lengpui and representatives from NABARD and Lead Bank, Kolasib were present during the event. The Pledge was conducted by the Chairperson, after which there is a presentation by resource persons on doubling farmer’s income. The Chief Guest requested the participants to fulfill their pledge. There was screening of videos at the beginning and at the end.
