Venue : KVK Marchak Farm, East Sikkim.
Description : In Sikkim, most of the area is kept fallow after rice due to non-availability of irrigation water and/or soil moisture during winter season. Generally, most of the farmers in Sikkim follow mono-cropping, hence, the cropping intensity of the state is very low (118 per cent). Similarly, farmers’ of the state leave their land fallow during rabi season instead of growing any crop after harvest of kharif crop. There is scope to enhance the cropping intensity of the state by exploring the best possible cropping system (Maize-Black gram-Yellow sarson/ Buckwheat) through resource conserving technologies (RCTs) like zero tillage by retaining some part of preceding crop stubble (at least 30%) and utilizing the residual soil moisture of kharif crop. ICAR-KVK East Sikkim successfully demonstrated zero-till yellow sarson cultivation in succession of kharif crop on 14th March, 2017 at KVK Marchak Farm, East Sikkim.

Venue : On campus and Timpyem, East Sikkim
Description : Rapeseed and mustard are most important rabi oilseed crops in Sikkim agro climatic condition. Major bottleneck in its production is reduction of yield due to pest attacks. Aphid and say fly are the major which caused the damage to crop at different stages and responsible for huge yield losses. Adult saw fly larvae makes uneven holes in the leaves during seedling stage and three to four week old crop is most favoured. Mustard aphid is serious pest of mustard. Both nymphs and adults suck the cell sap from different parts of the plant resulting stunted, dried, no pod and seed formation. Aphids secrete honeydew, which is responsible to the growth of black fungus known as “sooty mould” that hinders the photosynthesis.
