Description : 30 nos. of Farmwomen were participated in the above training programme. All are Schedule cast family. discussion on the above tarining programme was as Hand weeding in onion is a common practice in kalahandi district, but it is a tedious, expensive and time consuming due to closer spacing and shallow root system. Non-availability of labourers during critical period of crop makes hand weeding difficult leading to heavy yield losses. Spraying of pre-emergence herbicides keeps the crop in weed free conditions during the early stages. At later stage, second flush of weeds will affect the bulb formation. Hand weeding helps to keep the weed population below economic threshold level throughout the crop growth period. Pre-emergence combined with hand weeding may be costly because of the reduced labour availability and higher labour cost.

Description : During the life cycle, banana produces number of suckers from the underground stem. If all these suckers are allowed to grow, they grow at the expense of the growth of the main plant and hence the growth of the sucker should be discouraged. Removal of unwanted suckers is one of the most critical operations in banana cultivation and is known as desuckering. Such suckers are removed either by cutting them off or the heart may be destroyed without detaching the sucker from the parent plant. Removal of suckers with a portion of corm at an interval of 5-6 weeks hastened shooting and increased the yield. In case of furrow planting earthing up should be done during rainy season to avoid water logging while during winter and summer the plant should be in the furrow. Propping operation is carried out in areas with high wind speeds. Pseudostems are propped up with bamboo, especially, at the time of bunch emergence.

Description : Pomegranate grows well under semi-arid conditions and can be grown upto an altitude of 500 m. above m.s.l.. It thrives well under hot, dry summer and cold winter provided irrigation facilities are available. The tree requires hot and dry climate during fruit development and ripening. Pomegranate tree is deciduous in areas of low winter temperature and an evergreen or partially deciduous in tropical and sub-tropical conditions. It can tolerate frost to a considerable extent in dormant stage, but is injured at temperature below - 110 C. Pomegranate is propagated vegetatively by cuttings, air layering or gootee. Square system of planting is mostly adopted. Planting distance is decided on the basis of soil type and climate. A spacing of 4-5 m. on marginal and very light soils is recommended. The recommended fertilizer dose is 600-700 g. N, 200-250 g. P2O5 and 200-250 g. K2O /tree/year. Application of 10 kg. farmyard manure and 75 g.

Description : Mulching is an important soil management practice of covering the soil surface around the base of plants to make conditions more favorable for growing and to conserve the available soil moisture. Mulch is a layer of material applied to the surface of an area of soil. This is one of the important soil management practices adopted in certain countries. Crop residues like straw, cotton stalks, leaves, saw dust, pine needles, coir dust arid other materials like polythene films or certain special kinds of paper are spread in the tree basins and in interspaces between trees. It affects soil temperature (depending on color, soil-mulch contact, bed orientation, time of year, light quality), reduces the weeds and keeps the fruit clean. The use of mulch material depends on its availability and mostly economic in nature. The commonly used mulch materials in fruit orchards are organic (fallen leaves, paddy straw, saw dust, hay etc.) and inorganic (plastic mulch, rubber mulch and polygene etc.).

Description : The dose of inorganic fertilizer and level of foliar spraying of water soluble fertilizer exhibited significant influence on all the growth attributes of chilli. The plant N, P and K uptake increased when the particular nutrient was applied at higher levels. The increased accumulation of NPK in the plant may be attributed to more availability of the respective nutrients and more absorptive area which resulted in the highest nutrient accumulation. The water use efficiency of the crops has to be increased in order to reduce the water loss from the field. Drip irrigation system is considered as the most effective micro irrigation method, as water is applied. Directly into soil at the crop root zone. The results of the study showed that drip irrigation levels have significant (P < 0.05) effects on crop yield. There were significant positive correlations (P < 0.01) between fruit number, fruit weight and fruit yield.

Description : Onion seeds are sown on nursery beds to raise seedlings for transplanting in the field. Raised beds of size 3 x 0.6 m and 10-15 cm in height are prepared. About 70 cm distance is kept between two beds to carry out operations of watering, weeding, etc. The surface of beds should be smooth and well levelled. Raised beds are necessary to avoid problem of water logging in heavy soils. In sandy soils, however, sowing can be taken up in flat beds. To avoid mortality of seedlings due to damping off, drenching of the beds with Bavistin (15-20 g/10 litres of water) is effective.

Description : Care of vegetable seedlings 1. Seeds must be kept moist but not wet until the seedlings emerge. This may take between 1-3 weeks, depending on the plant type. As they grow stronger, thorough but less frequent watering is required to encourage root growth. 2. They will need shade when young but should be increasingly exposed to the sun so they become used to conditions in the garden. Water in the morning rather than at night. 3. Aim to build your no dig garden at least one week before you are ready to transplant. That will give it time to settle. Transplanting vegetable seedlings 1. Mark where you plan to put each of your plants. Use a trowel to make a hole large enough to take the root system. 2. Have the soil in the seedlings' containers damp enough so that the soil clings to the roots of each plant as much as possible. 3. Gently prise or tip out each vegetable seedling from its container taking as much of the soil as you can with it into the garden bed.

Description : Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) okra is a widely cultivated vegetable and can be found in almost every market. The nutritional constituents of okra include calcium, protein, oil and carbohydrates; others are iron, magnesium and phosphorus. Most okra is eaten in cooked or processed form. Young fruits may be eaten raw. The oil in the seed could be as high as in poultry eggs and soybean. Nitrogen as well as Phosphorus plays an important role in fruit, seed and quality development of okra. NPK fertilizer has been reported to give a yield increase in okra. Different methods of fertilizer application have been known to influence plant yields. Crop response to N fertilization varies with rate, timing and methods of N application in relation to plant development. In broadcasting, the fertilizer is uniformly applied over the soil surface and may be incorporated in the soil or left on the soil surface and may reach the root zone by percolating rainfall or irrigation water.

Description : Spoilage of fresh fruits and vegetables is a serious problem in Kalahandi District of Odisha state. Cool storage can prolong the life of fresh produce, but refrigeration equipment is expensive to buy, expensive to run, and expensive to maintain. There is, however, a practical, low-cost alternative for on-farm fruit and vegetable storage which employs the cooling power of evaporation. Zero energy cool chambers stay 10- 15° C cooler than the outside temperature and maintain about 90 percent relative humidity. And they are easy to build out of locally available materials, such as brick, sand, bamboo, straw, and gunny bags. For Construction the following step should be followed - 1.Select a raised site close to a source of water. 2. Make a floor with bricks 3. Erect a double wall 70 cm high, leaving a cavity 7.5 cm wide between the two walls. 4. Drench the chamber with water.5. Soak fine, river-bed sand with water. 6. Fill the cavity between the double wall with this wet sand.

Description : Vegetable seedlings can be produced in containers (boxes or trays) or on seed beds. The nursery should be readily accessible, close to a permanent source of clean water for irrigation, not prone to erosion and at least 50m away from vegetable farms to avoid spread of pests and diseases. Avoid sites very close to major roads and factories. For seedbed seedling production, sites with well drained and fertile soils free of soil borne diseases and pests including nuisance weeds are preferred. Make beds 1.0m-1.2m wide x2m or more long. Water the beds, cover with 4cm thick dry grass, sawdust or rice straw; leave for 2-3 days to reactivate spores of disease pathogens then burn to sterilize soil or cover the seed bed with transparent plastic sheets for 5-8 weeks to sterilize the soil. For container grown seedlings, soils can be sterilized by steaming. For both seed bed and container grown seedlings, allow media to cool for 2-3 days before sowing.

Description : Fertigation is a method of fertilizer application in which fertilizer is incorporated within the irrigation water by the drip system. In this system fertilizer solution is distributed evenly in irrigation. The availability of nutrients is very high therefore the efficiency is more. In this method liquid fertilizer as well as water soluble fertilizers are used. By this method, fertilizer use efficiency is increased from 80 to 90 per cent. Advantages of fertigation Nutrients and water are supplied near the active root zone through fertigation which results in greater absorption by the crops. As water and fertilizer are supplied evenly to all the crops through fertigation there is possibility for getting 25-50 per cent higher yield. Fertilizer use efficiency through fertigation ranges between 80-90 per cent, which helps to save a minimum of 25 per cent of nutrients. By this way, along with less amount of water and saving of fertilizer, time, labour and energy use is also reduced substant
