Description : The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Khordha under ICAR- Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar conducted On-farm trial on genetically improved catla spawn during nursery phase at three locations under two blocks of the district. Genetically improved catla spawn were procured from ICAR- Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar and stocked in farmers’ pond to assess their survival and growth from spawn to fry rearing. A higher average survival of 40% was recorded in the genetically improved catla compared to 35% average survival of in normal catla during the rearing period of 30 days. Mr. P.R Sahoo, Subject Matter Specialist conducted the programme under the guidance and supervision of Dr. S.S. Giri, Head and the Nodal officer of the programme.

Description : Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Khordha, ICAR- CIFA, Bhubaneswar organized a three days training programme for the Extension Functionaries on “Economic empowerment of women through Ornamental fish farming” at KVK, Khordha from 23rd to 25th September, 2021. The trainees are imparted knowledge on ornamental aquaculture & entrepreneurship development, water quality management for ornamental fish rearing, ornamental fish breeding & culture, breeding and culture of egg layers, feed preparation for Ornamental fishes and aquarium fabrication. A total of 15 Extension Personnel’s from Krushi Mitra/ Prani Mitra/ MBK deputed by the BDO, Balianta and Bhubaneswar Block of Khordha district benefitted from the training programme. Description : Tilapia is known as the ‘Aquatic chicken’ because of its low-maintenance cultivation and wide spread acceptance as a sustainable food. As the species breed in early stages, its growth is restricted smaller size in pond condition. Due to its voracious breeding nature, culture of all male tilapia is emerging as a viable option for farmers. To popularize the species in the district a demonstration programme was conducted involving three farmers. All male tilapia fry was supplied from the District Fisheries Office, kausalyaganga, Bhubaneswar and stocked in the farmer’s pond. After a culture period of six months the species attained an average body weight of 490 grams. Field Day of the demonstration on culture of all male Tilapia

Description : To popularize Tilapia species in the district a Front Line Demonstration (FLD) programme on all male Tilapia (Monosex) was conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Khordha working under the administrative control of ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Kausalyaganga, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Advanced fry of male Tilapia were supplied to the fish farmers of Banapur and Baliant Blocks of Khordha district. After a culture period of six months the species attained an average body weight of 490 grams. On the occasion a ‘Field day’ was organised in the village Gotapalli of Banapur block on 21-09-2021. Around 30 fish farmers of Gotapalli and nearby villages attended the programme. Beneficiaries of the demonstration programme shared their experience of culturing the species with fellow fish farmers. The programme was conducted by Mr. P.R Sahoo, Subject Matter Specialist of KVK-Khordha under the supervision of Dr. S.S. Giri, Head of KVK-Khordha.

Assessment of Amur carp in carp polyculture system

Advanced fry of Amur carp was supplied to the farmers from NFDB, Kausalyaganga. After a culture period of six months the species attained an average body weight of 800 g. OFT on Assessment of value addition of pumpkin

Description : On Farm Trial on Assessment of value addition of pumpkin was carried out at five farmers field at Balianta and Balipatna Block of Khordha District. Pumpkin flesh powder and RTS beverage was prepared. Pumpkin fruit slices of 5mm thickness were blanched at 90⁰ C for 1 minute and dried at 60⁰ C. The yield of pumpkin powder was 250g/kg of pumpkin flesh. Pumpkin powder is rich in calcium, iron and β-carotene. It can be incorporated with cereal flours to prepare various value added food products. Pumpkin RTS beverage was prepared using pumpkin pulp: sugar (1:1 ratio). Citric acid, sodium benzoate, sorbic acid were used as preservative. Ginger juice (100ml) were also added for taste and flavour. The yield of RTS beverage was 9lt from 1.5kg pumpkin pulp. The benefit cost ratio of Pumpkin RTS beverage was 1.58. It can be a suitable nutritious drink for all age groups of population. Dr. S. S. Giri was the Nodal officer and coordinated the programme. Description : The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Khordha, ICAR- Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), Bhubaneswar organized a training programme on “Preparation of Vermicompost.” on 11.08.2021 for the Schedule Caste (SC) farmwomen at Guapur village, Balipatna Block, Khordha District. The trainees were imparted knowledge about the vermicompost production techniques using farm and kitchen waste. A total of 50 (SC) farmwomen benefitted from the training programme. Description : ICAR-KVK, Khordha conducted Front Line Demonstrations on Honey Bee ((Apis cerena indica) rearing under backyard condition for five farmwomen at Kathakhuntia, Begunia block of Khordha District. All the critical inputs such as honey bee box, bee box stand, smoker, bee veil, queen gate, knife, nucleus box, honey extractor, feeder, supplementary feed for beekeeping along with Apis cerena indica bee colony were provided to the farmwomen. The yield of honey was 5kg per box. Besides honey, 2 unit of Honey bee colony was produced per year using nucleus bee box. The honey was sold @ Rs. 500/- per kg and Honey bee colony was sold @ Rs.1000/- per colony. Smt. Sukanti Behera (ACTO) conducted the FLD. Dr. S. S. Giri, Head,KVK-Khordha was the Nodal officer and coordinated the demonstration.

Description : An introduction and demonstration of Solar Bubble Dryer (SBD) for the first time in Odisha was held at KVK-Khordha of ICAR-CIFA on 19 November, 2018. The critical stages for intervention for improving production using scientific management practices and connecting fish farmers with market for better price following the group marketing approach is mantra of this initiative. On 7 December, 2018 ABS was launched in Jaganathpur Village of Tangi Block, Khordha district a prominent cluster of aquaculture by KVK and DFO of Khordha and both are government players. Dr. P. N. Training on Ornamental Fish culture for Rural Youth

Description : A training programme on ornamental fish farming for rural youth of was conducted by KVK. The duration of the programme was for five days from 26th to 30th, November, 2018. Ten numbers of rural youth were trained on different aspects of ornamental fish farming. During this period the participants were trained on breeding, culture and rearing of live-bearers and egg-layers and identification of different brood fishes. Management practices like health management, water quality management and feed management were imparted both in theory and practical mode. Special session on aquarium fabrication, feed formulation and its storage were also covered. An overall idea on economics of backyard ornamental farming with small design was also informed to the participants. Market potential and linkage with buyers and sellers was initiated during the program. The programme was coordinated by Mr. PR Sahoo, SMS of KVK-Khordha. The selection of participants were from the District Fisheries Office.
