Description : The theme for World Soil Day 2020 is “Keep soil alive, protect soil biodiversity”. Soil biodiversity is the mix of living organisms in the soil.The diversity of organisms living within soils is critical to all earth ecosystems because soil organisms are essential for the cycling of ecosystem nutrients and necessary for plant growth and plant nutrition. The farmers were educated about all these important aspects in the gosthi organised by KVK, Dehradun in the Vikasnagar block of Dehradun. The MLA Sh. Munna Singh Chauhan was the Chief Guest in the programme. Total 128 farmers, 24 Officials participated and 150 Soil Health Cards were distributed distributed.

Description : Krishi Vigyan Kendra Dehradun took an initiative to lit this diwali by using herbal cow dung diya. Under the process of making these, First, the cow dung is slightly sun-dried, and a small ratio Neem leaves, lantana leaves, lemon grass, tulsi leaves and many more locally available leaves were dried, ground finely and added to the cow dung mix. The dough prepared was then shaped into diyas.Once dried, the diyas are painted with all-natural colours like Geru, turning them into a beautiful hue of color. We use turmeric and thin paste of ground rice to design the diyas. The concept behind making these diyas was to make them herbal and eco-friendly. To make these diyas purely herbal bee wax was used to fill instead of oil. The natural essence of lemon grass is very powerful, and it was added in the melted wax to give us an added advantage to enhance its acceptability. So far more than 50000 such diyas have been made by 35 rural women, nicely packed and are being sold.

Management of shoot gall psylla in mango

Description : Two Spraying of recommended insecticides were done by the farmers of Badwala village of Vikasnagar block of Dehradun in 21 ha area in August-September, 2013 due to which farmers harvested about 4000 Q. mango from 2100 trees in June-August, 2014 which was almost doubled. Two spraying of recommended insecticides have been applied by the farmers of 24 villages of Vikasnagar and Sahaspur blocks of Dehradun in about 200 ha area. The spraying of these insecticides significantly reduced the incidence of shoot gall psylla and increased the productivity of mango. Farmers harvested about 40,000 Q. mango from 200 ha area in June-August, 2015. The intensive campaign organized by KVK, Dehradun encouraged the mango farmers of the region. The farmers applied above insecticides in about 1200 ha area in about 55 villages of Dehradun during August-September, 2015. Farmers harvested 2,40,000 Q. mango fruits from 1200 ha area between June-August, 2016.
