Coir pith samples analysis from farmers field to check suitability for preparation of compost

Description : KVK-Lakshadweep initiated a study to identify the most suitable coirpith samples (i.e. unrettled and rettled) for the preparation of soilless media. The study involves analyzing the electrical conductivity (EC) and pH of the coirpith samples to determine their appropriateness. The results indicated that the electrical conductivity (EC) values of retted coirpith samples were within the permissible limits and thus suitable for further use. In contrast, unretted coirpith samples exhibited higher EC values, exceeding the permissible limits for coco peat production as recommended by the Coir Board. All the lab facilities were provided by Department of Science and Technology UT Lakshadweep. This program was coordinated by SMS Dr. Abhishek Das (Soil Sciences) and SMS Dr. Ansul (Vegetable science).

Focus Group Discussion and Data Collection towards Coconut Halwa of Lakshadweep Islands

Description : KVK has been invited by Lakshadweep Development Corporation Limited (LDCL), UT administration of Lakshadweep to work on lodging a geographical indication (GI)for the unique coconut value added product of Lakshadweep the “Coconut Halwa”. A working committee has been formed by LDCL involving KVK for this assignment. The survey was led by Dr. P.N. Ananth, Head, KVK along with officials from LDCL. During the three-day baseline survey, four SHGs and 12 individual entrepreneurs producing coconut halwa were involved. Both survey and focus group discussion were the techniques employed. The forthcoming round of baseline surveys has been planned in two more islands. ICAR-CPCRI has been invited to provide expertise in the process of lodging application for GI tagging by the UT administration for this unique product.

3rd Round of Vegetable promotion in Lakshadweep Islands: Initiated during 95th ICAR Foundation Day

Description : Based on the request from the UT administration of Lakshadweep, KVK has provided vegetable seeds for 2000 households in 10 inhabited islands of Lakshadweep for the consecutive third year. This initiative was started during the ICAR 95th Foundation Day and Technology Day. The initiative is under the convergence with the Department of Agriculture, UT administration of Lakshadweep. The varieties of ICAR-IIHR that have been evaluated jointly since 2021 by the KVK and the Department of Agriculture have been provided. Before the implementation of this programme Dr. P.N. Ananth, Head, KVK had detailed discussion with the scientists of ICAR-IIHR on 26-6-2023 at Bengaluru. The seeds have been distributed to 2000 households across 10 islands involving the Department of Agriculture. Description : ICAR-Indian Institute for Horticulture Research organized the National Horticulture Fair from 22-25 February 2023 in Bengaluru. Five farmers from Lakshadweep were selected jointly by KVK and State Department of Agriculture to undergo the exposure visit. Five farmers were represented from Kavaratti, Agatti and Kadmat islands. The farmers witnessed the live demonstrations and other technological innovations in vegetable and fruits. The cocopeat technology of making soil less medium was specially demonstrated by the inventor scientist to the farmers with the intention creating entrepreneurship. During the fair Mr. C. Mohammed from Kadmat islands was felicitated as the innovative farmer from Lakshadweep by ICAR-IIHR. Mr. Mohammed is one of the farmers benefitted from the joint efforts of IIHR and KVK-Lakshadweep in improving the vegetable cultivation in terrace gardens. Dr.P.N. A Front Line Demonstration on ‘Eco-friendly management of whitefly infestation in coconut in Lakshadweep Islands’ was also conducted at Kavaratti on 15th February 2023. More than 30 farmers and extension officials from Lakshadweep attended the training and demonstration. An advisory note was prepared by KVK towards the management of Whitefly in the islands. Dr. P. Animal Health Camp organized by KVK-Lakshadweep is first of its kind in the Islands

Description : The animal health camp was organized with the support of Department of Animal Husbandry and the FPO formed by KVK in Kavaratti. The camp was inaugurated by Shri. AboobakerKoya, Progressive farmer and President, Organic farming Society from Kavaratti who was key for requesting KVK to organize such camps. The camp comprised activities towards identification of diseases, practicing deworming, providing supplementary dietary and others related to dairy and poultry. About 4141 animals (dairy cows, goats, hen, duck, poultry birds), pets and birds were treated and other supplements were provided benefitting 512 farmers and other stakeholders. Description : KVK formed the first FPO in Kavaratti during 2021-22 under the PM scheme of 10,000 FPOs. Upon registration of the Kavaratti Island Coconut Producers Cooperative Society (FPO) the KVK has been working for its membership drive, streamlining the functions and management along with providing selected Agricultural Extension Services. A business plan has been envisaged by KVK for strengthening the FPO as being mandated. The FPO has entered into providing services to farmers through field days, capacity building programmes and other ways with the facilitation of KVK and funding from Coconut Development Board. A FGD and a consultation meeting was held on 4-10-2022 at Kavaratti for the benefit of FPO by KVK-Lakshadweep inviting members of FPO, experts from Department of Agriculture, LDCL, progressive farmers, entrepreneurs and business men involved in fresh coconut and dried copra marketing. The meeting was coordinatd by Dr. Mohammed Koya and Dr. PN Ananth, Head of KVK.

Description : A farmer’s field day programme was organised by the Kavaratti Island Coconut Cooperative Ltd and KVK Lakshadweep and coordinated by Coconut Development Board at Kavaratti, Lakshadweep islands. The farmers field day was organised at Kavaratti on 29 September 2022. The meeting was attended Dr. P. N. Ananth, Head, KVK, Mohammed Koya and Dr. Abdul Gafoor along with 20 farmers and farm women. The farmers field day was presided by Mr. Mohammed M. P., Member Panchayat Member and delivered his inaugural address with emphasizing to fund out ways and means for the success of the formed first Farmers Producers Organisation. Velvet Bean (Mucuna pruriens) Enriching Soils in Coconut Gardens of Lakshadweep islands: A potential Environmental Service

Description : Recent studies indicate that soils of Lakshadweep are deficit of nutrients causing severe incidences of insect, pest and diseases. Loss in immunity of coconut palms has been widely observed. One of the recommendation of ICAR-CPCRI and ICAR-IIHR to KVK-Lakshadweep, ICAR-CMFRI is towards enriching the soil with nutrients. Being an organic territory, all biological methods have to be tried out. One of the advised intervention is to introduce Velvet Bean (Mucuna pruriens), that can fix nitrogen in soil and have the potential to contribute to soil N concurrently increase the yields. With this, ICAR-IIHR supplied Mucuna seeds var. Arka subra to be demonstrated in three islands. In this series, the first demonstration was held at Kavaratti involving 15 major coconut growers. Seeds of Mukuna were distributed and the concern about soil health were discussed and strategies were drawn out. The demonstration was introduced by Dr. P. N. Ananth, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK.

Description : Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary DARE and DG, ICAR visited the KVK at Kavaratti on 16th April 2022. He was accompanied by Dr. J.K. Jena, DDG (Fisheries Science), Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan, Director, ICAR-CMFRI and Dr. V. Venkatasubramanian, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Bangalore.During the visit, a Farmer’s Meet was organized which was attended by more than 60 progressive farmers along with the officials of the UT Administration of Lakshadweep. Addressing the gathering Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra stated that seaweed culture, value addition and processing of coconut and fish are the three important areas for improving entrepreneurship in the islands. During the meet, farmers, entrepreneurs, promoters of new FPOs formed and beneficiaries of TSP-ICAR-CMFRI were felicitated by the DG, ICAR. Before the Farmer’s Meet, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra visited the District Agro Meteorological Unit. The visit was coordinated by Dr. P.N. Ananth, Head, KVK.

Description : A training-cum-demonstration programme was conducted at Kavaratti on 11 February 2022 on production of coconut sugar using the technology developed by ICAR-CPCRI. KVK personnel and selected entrepreneurs participated in the training programme. Dr. Shameena Beegum, scientist from ICAR-CPCRI Kasaragod took the class on production of coconut sugar and imparted hands on training to the prticipants. The demonstration was organised jointly by KVK and ICAR-CPCRI. This is the first such kind of demonstration organised in the island towards production of coconut sugar from Coconut Sap (Neera). Shri Singh also applauded the four major programmes of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Lakshadweep of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi during the occasion. The Union Minister presented the Certificate of Declaration to the Shri Praful Patel, Administrator, Union Territory of Lakshadweep. The Certification is under the PGS-India, a Participatory Organic Guarantee Programme of the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India. The Certification will enhance the coconut production by the farmers and the coconut value-addition enterprises in the Islands.

Description : A special day long (12th April 2021) off-campus training was organized by ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru in collaboration with ATARI, Bengaluru at KVK, Kavarati island of Lakshadweep on farmer friendly technologies of ICAR-IIHR. The lecture was delivered by Dr R Senthil Kumar, Principal Scientist, Division of Social sciences and Training, ICAR-IIHR. The programmes was attended by all KVK staff and line department officials. Dr V Venkatasubramnaian, Director ATARI, inaugurated the programme. During the discussion, it was suggested that adopt five islands in order to demonstrate selected ICAR-IIHR fruit, vegetable and ornamentals crops technologies. It was also decided that 20 farmers will be selected and commodity interest groups will be formed and need-based ICAR-IIHR technologies will be distributed under TSP component.
